Therapy with James Barry

About Me

I consider it an honor to be a part of the process of another's healing and transformation.  It has been my calling since 8th grade, and a lifelong journey far beyond a career that began in 2010. This work is my passion and hobby as well. I obsess over consciousness expansion, healing, and self-improvement. This path has led me to developing a holistic practice that meets the needs of a wide variety of people and issues. I consider myself a lifelong learner or student of life.  My education continues regularly through my reading, training, and personal experiences with inner work.  I have a section in the dropdown menu titled "reading notes," where you can get some great insight and knowledge from various books I have read. There are also a few videos below to get to know me and my approach a little bit more so you can really feel out if we are a good fit to work together.

My Approach

I specialize in helping adults move through challenging transitions and transformations to become their potential. Healing from trauma (complex and single incident) is often a foundational part of this work, resulting in greater resiliency and wholeness. This allows you to get to know the Self on a profoundly deep level, and to be working in harmony with your internal system. The tools are already within. Sometimes, we just need to be shown how to access them. My approach is holistic and individualized to meet your needs, combining experiential therapies with talk therapy and rapport. It is transpersonal and integral. Branching off of the idea to "Transcend and Include," we open a brave space that welcomes all parts of you to be recognized, understood, and integrated in order to truly transcend.

My approach is often phase oriented.  Phase 1: Orientation, rapport/trust/safety building, internal resourcing and coping skill development. Phase 2: That deep work, healing, etc. Phase 3: Re-orienting to a new identity not formed around trauma.  This structure is non-linear; we may go from 3 to 2 at times.  I use a mix of modalities and techniques in sessions depending on what we are working on: EMDR, IFS (Parts Work), Brainspotting, Breathwork, Mindfulness, and CBT.  Parts work is my favorite and what I find to be the most versatile and profound.  I have an interest in ego work and shadow work, which fits in nicely with a parts work perspective.

The truth is that we are complex and multi-faceted humans, so we need a multi-faceted approach.  A modality that helps you explore your cognitive structures is not necessarily going to help you uncover unconscious structures or somatic ailments.  Therefore, we use different modalities depending on what we are working on. I see many common health diagnoses such as anxiety and depression as more of a "symptom." We can begin with coping skills and modalities to address your symptom, though ideally we want to get to the root of your symptom, which is often a trauma that needs healing. Once we provide such healing, then there may not be a "symptom" to have to manage anymore (or as much).

You are very capable of becoming the person that you have always wanted to be. You are very capable of healing.  Are you ready to feel how profound it is for mental health treatment to include mind, body, spirit, and shadow?

Ideal Client Matches

Clients often come to me who have put in their time with talk therapy and realize there is a wall most people hit with that eventually. I also love working with first timers in therapy and bringing clients in to their therapeutic journeys.  Experiential therapy is a completely different style of therapy.  Experiential therapy is a wonderful way to create change, find healing, and transcendence.  That being said, talk therapy is also a crucial part of our work in establishing rapport and foundation for the experiential component.  Beyond any therapeutic modality, the number one factor in therapeutic success is rapport. Without rapport, we get nowhere.  With rapport, even talk therapy can be enough for profound change and healing.  Therefore, I am also open to talk therapy being our main modality in our working relationship if that is what works best for you as the client. There is magic in having a deep, authentic therapeutic rapport.  This is why I try to express myself on this page and share videos of me speaking to give you the opportunity to feel if that type of connection may be possible between us, before you even reach out to schedule.   I cannot emphasize enough, just how important it is to feel a connection that fosters trust and safety in this work!

Descend, Ascend, Transcend

Transcend

What is true transcendence? Not the spiritual bypassing kind where you have a profound experience and decide from this day moving forward that you are just all love and light... but a more integrated transcendence that is inclusive of all parts of you and human nature. Working with me is a way to achieve this more truly balanced nature of transcendence.  In doing so, we will spend time in sessions ascending and descending.

Descend

Ahhh... to plunge into the depths of your darkness.  To embrace all parts of you in the process. How necessary to visit this work at times for true enlightenment.  How destabilizing this can be, yet how rewarding.  Allow me to be your support through this process and not be alone on it.  Through a combination of Parts-work and psychodynamic therapy, informed by Jungian shadow-work, we can navigate this difficult territory bravely together.

Ascend

Ahhh... to bask in the light.  To achieve blissful trance-like states surrendering to all that is.  To have your respite as you are rewarded while arriving into your new higher way of being, and surrender all that you are to that.  Allow me to guide you through climbing the ladder through various levels of awakening and enlightenment.  Healing is pleasurable. It is a release that opens us up to these higher levels.  We can achieve this through various therapeutic modalities while also being informed of various spiritual teachings about the nature of enlightenment.
